So you have got to that point………you need a new member of staff!! Its exciting getting new staff isn’t it, but honestly the work that you have to do to get what you want, oh me oh my!
There is just so much to do, but first things first you need to right a job description. Easy isn’t it??
Er No……….just ask all the people out there who are considering or are committed to locating a new career, they have to write a new CV, and that is just as tough!!
So what do you think a job description should look like then? Just a list of core duties and a brief on what kind of candidate that you want???
NO!!! Absolutely NOT!!!
You are looking to attract talent aren’t, someone who is looking to help you drive the business forward. A list of core duties and experiences just wont do that. Would you be interested in that??
You have to be different! If you don’t then your job description will get lost in the huge sea of job specifications that pretty much say the same thing!!
You have worked tirelessly to ensure that you and your business stands for something, that your company is head and shoulders above your competitors, so please don’t let yourself down by producing a bland job description as it wont attract the type of individual that you want to hire.
How can I put this?
Imagine this HUGE sea of job descriptions, it has so many different colours of blue’s and green’s with hints of grey & black. The item that you are looking for is deep blue. So get looking…………..easy to spot??
NOT AT ALL!!
So be different…………Lets try again.
Imagine this HUGE sea again and the item that you are searching for is luminous yellow with orange stripes and flashing light on top………can you spot it now?
Of course you can, you’ll spot that straight away.
This is how you need to make your job description look to the potential candidates that are out there. The thing is that there are people out there that don’t even know that they are looking for a job until something interesting catches their eye!

- Key achievements of your company
- Where is your company located?
- Why is your company amazing to work for & why?
- Get current staff members to add comments as to why they joined and why they enjoy working at your company
You still need to add in the core duties of the job itself and the key experience of the sort of candidate that you need, but this should really only be 4 bullet points each. The key here is to provide the broad outline of the job and the candidate………..the bit that sets you apart is the company, so sell it to your prospective new employee!!
